The South Suburban Mayors and Managers Association (SSMMA) is soliciting proposals for a planning consultant (or a partnership of consultants) to conduct a transportation, land use and economic development study of the Illinois Route 394 and Illinois Route 1 corridor.

SSMMA is an intergovernmental agency providing technical assistance and joint services to 43 municipalities representing a population over 650,000 in south Cook and southeast Will Counties. SSMMA members work cooperatively on transportation, legislation, land use, economic development, recycling, purchasing, stormwater and open space planning, infrastructure, human resources, public safety and housing issues. More information about SSMMA may be found here:

The Illinois Department of Transportation Office of Planning and Programming has awarded federal State Planning and Research funds and state funds to SSMMA for the purpose of conducting a study of the Illinois Route 394 and Illinois Route 1 corridor. SSMMA has received a commitment from Cook and Will counties to provide local matching funds. SSMMA will award a contract of up to $290,000 to the consultant (or partnership of consultants) selected to perform the study.

Project Description
The Illinois Route 394 and Route 1 corridor extends approximately 20 miles in southeast Cook and Will counties from Interstate 80 to the Will-Kankakee County line. Over the last several decades, land within and adjacent to the corridor has steadily developed and traffic through the corridor has steadily increased. Local concerns and priorities have shifted as well, to the commercial development of IL 394 in Crete, development of an intermodal freight hub nearby in Crete, protection of Goodenow Grove, economic development in South Cook County, increased truck traffic through Beecher and the increasing need for improved connections to Indiana.

While much of the corridor is still rural, it is urbanizing. Population and job growth is expected to continue as the Chicago metropolitan area expands... For the complete description, please download the PDF
