Cambridge, MA

Submittal Deadline: 08/19/2014

The City of Cambridge, Massachusetts is sponsoring an open space planning and design competition, CONNECT KENDALL SQUARE, looking for new thinking with respect to the public realm, connections, programming, and place making.

The competition is a unique opportunity to plan and implement a vision for the entire open space network in Kendall Square and eastern Cambridge and vicinity. Over the past several decades, Kendall Square has transformed from a former industrial area into a world-renowned center of biotech, high tech research, and innovation. To complement this bustling hub, the City plans a total of five acres of new or redesigned open space throughout the area.
The goal of the competition is a comprehensive open space framework that will be used to facilitate the creation of exceptional, visionary open spaces, further promote the innovative character of the area, link disparate elements, and help create a sense of place and community. The framework will also help determine the character and role of the new public open spaces in the area (which will be designed as part of separate, subsequent processes), and guide private entities as to potential programming and design of future open space as part of private developments.

The competition begins July 2014 and will run through the winter of 2015. Stage I submissions are due August 19, 2014, and focus on Team Leaders. Stage III finalists will be awarded a $50,000 honorarium. Participation is strongly encouraged from those outside the design and planning professions.
