There is no greater task which we face with respect to our continued prosperity outside of dealing with the issue of sustainability. One of the greatest challenges is in helping communities and stakeholders to become aware of the significance and relevance of this issue in the midst of all of the competing challenges which we currently face with respect to the economy and other social issues. This session will focus on “what” sustainability is and the attributes of sustainability initiatives such as the “Green Cities Alabama” initiative in Huntsville including a discussion of the benefits of these initiatives in generating a return on investment. A discussion of the “so what” evidence which points out the unsustainable direction we are moving in with respect to both the built and natural environment will also be included along with the apparent consequences of our actions. It is not possible for us to consume our way to prosperity. The session will conclude with a discussion of the “now what” which will outline a path forward for communities in dealing with the issue of sustainability on a local level.
