As Florida’s aging population continues to grow, we must prepare communities by focusing on ways to improve the safety, access, and mobility of our citizens. This session will discuss an "Aging in Place" checklist to assist communities in promoting and encouraging practices that support and enhance aging in place. By promoting partnerships with stakeholders like Florida Main Street, communities can work together to address the special needs of our aging population in their transportation, land use and housing plans. When driving is no longer an option, aging adults should be able to create their own personal transportation plan based on personal needs and wants. By providing a personal plan for retirement from driving we will help seniors remain independent, mobile, and active in their communities among other benefits. Following the session, attendees will be able to recognize the community characteristics needed to keep and attract those wanting to "age in place", and access resources to empower older adults when want to start planning for life when driving is no longer an option.
