This session will constitute a visual “walking tour” of three cities illustrating straight forward planning principles for emerging, revitalizing, and improving the civic space of the sidewalk. Cities to be discussed include: Edinburgh – An overview of approximately 20 examples of well crafted three dimensional signage that adds character and visual interest to these streets and storefronts; London – Case studies of storefronts that engage the street, ‘Pop-up’ markets, doorways that add visual interest, and small scale public art that adds richness and pedestrian interest to public space; and San Juan – Facades, balconies and color schemes that are great examples of what is possible with simplicity , proportion and color.
