Overview

No longer strictly the domain of map geeks in windowless basement offices, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software has found its way onto the desktops of planners and policy makers across planning domains. This presentation will be a tour of best practices for efficiently using GIS and producing maps that compliment planning documents and the procedures they support. Topics will not only include highly practical tips and tricks for using ESRI software to make communicative cartographic products but will offer insight into the strengths and weaknesses of the tools used to make spatial decisions. In this session, attendees will learn to identify the components of a well-developed map and recognize the limitations as well as a the potential of GIS to solve planning problems.
