Planners incorporate public spaces into communities, but what happens next? This panel of creative professionals and placemakers will share examples of the conventional and unconventional ways in which they’ve used public spaces, the opportunities and outcomes of creative placemaking, and other fun stories. This session is designed to expand planners’ perspectives on public space and the ways in which it gets used. Too often, planners incorporate public spaces into communities without always seeing the ways in which the community uses the space. Now, creative professionals are rethinking the ways in which public space gets used and are developing creative approaches to put people back into the places planners design. This effort is known as “creative placemaking” and is empowering local communities, revitalizing public spaces, and encouraging citizens to re-think their notions of what is public space and how it gets used.
