The Fairbanks Metropolitan Area Transportation System (FMATS) is a small MPO with a big job to do: Build consensus in the greater Fairbanks community around a $300,000 public art project within the Alaska DOT&PF right-of-way. This session details the challenges, techniques, and outcome of a robust public participation program for the selection and implementation of a Public Art selection process. This session will include how to select and facilitate a Citizen’s Advisory Committee, tips on public input coordination, and the procurement process for federally funded public art right here in Alaska. This session will detail the process by which public art was incorporated into a highway construction project after community members expressed their displeasure in the proposed planned installation. It will detail the process that was employed to solicit ideas for themes and artists, including the public involvement process, and how this may serve as a model for future enhancement opportunities in MPO projects.
