Overview

This program will look at the historical use and construction of the Washington Avenue Pier. The presenters will discuss the following challenges of retrofitting and stabilizing a derelict industrial‐era pier for use as public open space: funding open space projects; designing prototype waterfront planting and construction restoration details; repurposing a decaying pier on a tidal river and international shipping channel; engaging the public in historical investigation and park design; restoring ecological function to an urban riverfront; constructing in a tidal zone, engineering a landscaped park over pier pilings, decking and cribbing; permitting process for a park, boardwalk and art installation; customizing fabrication for waterfront stabilization; using a design‐build delivery system for public open space improvements
