The session will begin with a brief overview on the issue of sustainability, and will then discuss two aspects of this topic in further detail. These aspects have been selected for their relevance to practicing planners, in their daily work. The first aspect of sustainability involves reclaiming and redeveloping existing highway commercial strips and underutilized downtown sites for mixed uses. The second involves practical methods for using land more efficiently for residential construction. This part of the talk will touch on new urban solutions for infill areas with public water and sewer, and then describes “conservation subdivision design” as a common-sense tool for use in less urbanized areas that will most likely continue to be zoned for new development, at least within the foreseeable future.
