The Lowline will be the world’s first underground park. This session will explain the innovative solar technology that will bring photosynthesis underground, creating a dynamic public space in a historic trolley terminal in one of the most park-poor neighborhoods of New York City, thus setting a precedent. Learning Objectives - Understand the technology behind the “remote skylight,” which harvests sunlight underground, permitting photosynthesis. - Learn how this new technology was publicly tested, thus garnering community support and widespread press attention that is facilitating implementation. - Learn how the community, in particular local youth, is being engaged in the process of imagining the Lowline, and helping design its future uses. - Understand how the Lowline will integrate current and historic transit infrastructure, public art, and culture.
