This session will discuss recent developments in urban agriculture in southern New England, including urban agriculture ordinances in Boston and Hartford, and Providence’s urban agriculture initiative, “Lots of Hope.” The program will analyze opportunities to use urban agriculture to grow economies and support diverse communities in the region. Planners will gain an understanding of the legal issues related to urban agriculture, and planning tools to encourage, regulate and implement urban agriculture. Planners will learn how urban agriculture is being used to create and enhance a sense of community, to support and celebrate diversity by allowing immigrant populations to grow culturally appropriate foods for consumption or sale, and to increase food security.
