Imagination leads to innovation in projects. The two speakers for Sparking Imagination will provide presentations posing the question “what if.” What would happen if transit stops were engaging and people felt as if they were part of the community, as opposed to waiting for transit under a sign along the side of the road? What if the built environment promoted all modes of transportation and had infrastructure available for people to make healthy transportation choices? Our presenters will spark your imagination to the possibilities.
Dan Burden, the Director of Innovation and Inspiration for Blue Zones, LLC, has focused his entire career on helping the world get back on its feet. Dan is best known for having combined land use and transportation strategies under the banner, “Don’t build transportation through communities; build communities through transportation.
Dan served as Florida DOT’s first full time bicycle coordinator (1980-1996), and became the first in the nation to wear both titles of pedestrian and bicycle coordinator. He is credited with creating the walking audit. He also coined the term and has now helped implement more than 400 “road diets,” around the nation.”
Dan was honored in 2014 by the White House as one of its six Transportation Champions of Change for that year. In 2001, Time magazine honored Dan as one of the six most important civic innovators in the world. That same year the Transportation Research Board made him their Distinguished Lecturer. In 2008 Planetizen named Dan as one of the 100 most important urban thinkers of all time.
By inspiring residents, policy makers, planners and designers to change their built environments to accommodate people, not just cars, Dan has helped more than 3,700 communities take steps to become more walkable and livable. Dan illustrates the benefits of sometimes-simple and oft-difficult changes, and provides a road map for people to create neighborhoods, streets and cities that are more healthy and better connected.
