Overview

The City of Unalaska has recently developed a Land Use Plan supplement to its Comprehensive Plan. The Planning Director and Planning Administrator will discuss just how this unfolded. To serve as a starting point, the Planning Department conducted an existing land use inventory. The development of the plan itself began with APA Community Planning Assistance facilitating the initial community engagement campaign and providing a knowledge base of port planning, housing, and the unique needs of the oil industry. Taking the CPAT report and holding an additional outreach campaign, Planning Staff then drafted the Land Use Plan: 2015.

Planners have a firm understanding of the value of a comprehensive plan and the regulations developed to help that plan become a reality. As professionals, we continue to seek out resources, tools, techniques and methods to make the basis of community plans accurately representation of the community’s desires as well as to be consistent with best planning practices. The objective of this session is to share what one remote community with a small planning department has done to engage a diverse citizenry in order garner input on future land use planning. The session will highlight the collaboration of planners involved with APA’s Community Planning Assistance Team in promoting community involvement and the role of planning in general.
