Overview

Workshop 1 will explore various design options in addressing the challenge of the Missing Middle. Much of the concern about creative approaches to greater density is resistance to changing the character of the South Coast. Panelists will explore how creativity, excellence in design principles, and application create beautiful and elegant solutions to greater density that can house more of the local workforce.

There is a range of Missing Middle housing: single unit detached, live/work spaces, courtyard apartments, flexible work space on the ground floor with separate housing above, conversion of under-utilized retail space, etc. This presentation will focus on the design possibilities for boomers moving out of the suburbs and for millennials moving into rental and alternative ownership. This presentation will also examine the design opportunities currently active in the average unit density zones of the Santa Barbara Master Plan.
