Nanluogu Alley is located in the southeast of the Drum Tower in Beijing. Its history can be traced back to Yuan Dynasty in 1267, which is named after its drum shape. It is the best preserved traditional residential area with typical “fish-bone” layout of Hutongs, and Sihe Yards follow the planning pattern in Yuan Dynasty. Its surrounding areas were included in the Beijing historical areas since the early 1990s. It is also rich in historical and contemporary culture, with former residences of the last Queen Wan Rong, Chiang Kai-shek, Mao Dun, Qibaishi etc.

Since 2000, the traditional community have faced the challenges of neighborhood declining, as some residents were laid-off in 1998 and live in a poor condition. The local government of the residential district implemented a serious of policies to regenerate the neighborhoods since 2007. These policies included urban redevelopment in particular neighborhoods, urban renewal of the street façade, and attracting commercial and cultural facilities. Currently, there are many fancy restaurants and bars in the area. These activities provided some clues on how to regenerate the neighborhood from the margins of decay.

We will reach the south entrance of Nanluogu Alley by subway line 4 and 6, and walk around the neighborhoods, and visit some old residence and new facilities. The participants will also get a bird’s-eye view of the inner city on the top of the Drum Tower.
