By some estimates one in three people living in the world’s cities in 2025 will have difficulty affording standard housing. In the largest global cities the problem is even more acute. The global housing affordability crisis threatens to render our greatest cities essentially unlivable for large portions of the world’s population. Such trends pose a challenge to the fundamental notion of urban diversity and inclusivity, as well as the economic and political functioning of metropolitan regions. What are the promising and innovative solutions being pursued to address the urban affordability crisis and to ensure that cities remain places of multiplicity and difference?
