MAPS 3 is a 10-year construction program designed to improve the quality of life in Oklahoma City funding by a one-cent sales tax. Of the eight projects, three are focused on downtown - MAPS 3 Park, New Convention Center, Modern Streetcar. The Modern Streetcar route was approved by City Council in 2013 which connected the downtown districts (Midtown, CBD, and Bricktown), improve mobility by providing the last-mile connection for transit users and promote a park once mentality. Near completion of the 95% design of the streetcar, the Convention Center location was moved to a new site. The MAPS office engaged the consultant team to conduct a study to consider modifications to the streetcar route to provide the best connection to the new Convention Center and Hotel. In a 2 month period, the consultant team developed 14 route alternatives, conducted a detailed evaluation, and worked with MAPS staff, EMBARK, Convention Center and Park consultant teams and the Modern Streetcar Subcommittee to come up with a preferred solution. The consultant team recommended Option 3 - Boulevard Re-Route with Sheridan Turn Back for an additional MAPS 3 commitment of $3M which provides:· Creation of two routes - Mainline and Bricktown Loop· Direct connection to and from the Convention Center Hotel and MAPS 3 park to Bricktown, CBD and Midtown with increased service frequency to 7 minutes· Operational flexibility for EMBARK· The existing project schedule maintained or slightly modified· Serves existing municipal structured parking· Promotes economic development The positive outcome of the project shows how working with multiple project stakeholders (MAPS 3 Park, Convention Center and Streetcar Subcommittees), City of Oklahoma City, and the City Council to get project buy-in on a cost effective solution that satisfies the needs of all parties involved.
