With recent advancements in technology, a host of new tools and applications are now available to enhance the planning process for transportation projects in four key areas  - analytics, environmental, engineering, and social engagement.  Planning is benefiting from developments in acquiring real-time data and analytics to validate existing understandings of traffic movements, as well as enhance models to forecast traffic demands.  Context sensitive solutions, streamlining, and planning and environmental linkages are expediting, while maintaining, the integrity of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), thus benefiting the overall project development process.  New roadway design ideas, such as permanent, innovative intersections/interchanges or by using temporary solutions like Super Street designs along US 281 in San Antonio, and traffic control strategies, are improving traffic flows and lessening roadway congestion.   Taking complex and technical data, concepts and ideas and simplifying them with new, intuitive and engaging imagery such as infographics, collaborative mapping and interactive polling fosters understanding by the public and can facilitate project support.
