Overview

As per U.S. Department of Agriculture 1 in 7 U.S. households are ?food insecure?, while an estimated 30-40% of the nation's food supply is wasted. Additionally, about 23.5 million Americans live in food deserts; nearly half of them are in low-income communities. Pressing challenges of food security, social equity, water scarcity, and climate change are requiring cities to rethink their aging urban grey infrastructure. 21st century infrastructure includes the need for a resilient food infrastructure that promotes local cultivation, processing and distribution of food in a sustainable manner - a food infrastructure that provides equitable access to nutrition through a visible, participatory and educational method is as important as a robust transportation infrastructure. It is imperative for a healthier, balanced, resilient future urban ecosystem. Panelists will share case studies of diverse scales including the Plan for Healthy Los Angeles, Los Angeles River Urban Agriculture Plan, San Mateo Resource Recovery Center concept, and Hunters Point/Bayview Aquaponics Farming. The goal is to spark discussion about existing policies and what could be accomplished through innovative, cross-disciplinary and integrated approaches that rethink the role of streets, open spaces, utility infrastructure and facilities. Lessons learned and future trends will be highlighted for policy changes.
