Play is an essential part of every child’s life and a vital component of learning. The UK and Europe are redefining play with play spaces like The Land and Wikado Playground. How can the U.S. bring nature, creativity, and risk-taking back to the play spaces we’re designing?

The Community Design Collaborative and the Delaware Valley Association for the Education of Young Children (DVAEYC) sought creative answers to that question through the Play Space initiative. Play Space engaged designers, educators, child care providers, and the community through public talks, exhibitions, community design-build projects, a design charrette, and an international design competition.

We’ll talk about why it’s important to focus on play space now, discuss the results of a yearlong efforts to bring together the diverse stakeholders of play space, and present the winners of the Play Space Design Competition.
