Overview

The SteelStacks Arts and Cultural Campus is a former steel mill site that has been restored,
adapted, and transformed into an arts and cultural campus featuring preserved blast
furnaces, historic steel mill buildings, an elevated walkway, a visitor center, outdoor plazas,
a performing arts pavilion, and an ArtsQuest Center building devoted to performing arts of
all types. Redevelopment was funded via a variety of sources and partners. The 9.5 acre site
has become a major tourist destination unlike any other in the United States. The session will
discuss the elements of historic preservation, brownfield redevelopment, arts and culture,
economic development, urban design and tourism that have each been an important
component of this site’s transformation and success.
