This session will review the efforts of PennDOT Secretary Leslie Richards and the PennDOT Program Center who are working to make transportation planning a more collaborative process that supports community development goals.  The current initiative of PennDOT, PennDOT Connects, reaches into community and transportation planning processes to initiate early dialogue and partnered decision-making about the kinds of transportation projects that will help a community achieve its vision.  He will describe the various ways PennDOT is supporting this initiative internally and its outreach to local communities. Preparing for the formal transportation planning process will also be discussed.  By preparing, a community can better articulate what is desired in transportation investments and design.  This includes considering the role of transportation facilities for non-transportation objectives like public spaces/placemaking approach of implementable comprehensive plans.
