Rural developers play a critical role in our state where the remote rural region covers 395,000 square miles and consists of 150 small communities. Since the time of contact, this region has experienced rapid socio-economic change and today, continues to grapple with challenges of rising energy costs, demographic shifts, and climate change. New generations of rural developers are well positioned to assist communities to navigate change and to help give a voice to the people in their communities at the regional, state, and national levels. As part of this presentation, a panel of current Rural Development faculty and students/alumni will share their perspectives, experiences, and examples of applied research that is making a difference in rural Alaska.
