Overview

Based on his 2009 APA Planner's Press book with the same title as this session, planning consultant Phil Walker will touch on key issues and strategies for downtown planning intended to result in physical and economic revitalization.  The presentation, adapted and updated from his same presentation given at the 2010 National APA conference, will be based heavily on specific examples of communities from across the country, particularly the South.

This session will explain the following issues:

1) How to successfully sell the value of downtown and need for a master plan.

2) The methodology for preparing a downtown plan, including public engagement.

3) Key strategies to include in plans for revitalization based on the National Main Street Center's "Four Point" Strategy of organization, design, economic restructuring and promotion.

4) How to successfully implement a downtown master plan.
