Overview

Walking tour of the High Line Park, which is a public park, built on a historic freight rail line elevated above the streets on Manhattan’s West Side. It runs from Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District to West 34th Street, between 10th and 12th Street. The tour includes several stops along the park at key park features to tell the story of the transformation from a rail line to a park as well as primary public gathering spaces, landscape features, overlooks, public art, and historic New York landmarks.

Learning objectives include:

  • Understand the transformation from freight rail line to park and the planning process involved

  • Learn how the non-profit community group, Friends of the Highline, developed the vision for the park and executed it, and how they maintain, operate and program for the park in partnership with the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation

  • Understand the design components that went into the development of the park including structural components, landscape design, pedestrian movement, gathering spaces, public art, and integration with the city

  • Learn about sustainable practices integrated in the park

  • Recognize the collaboration between the community and the city to achieve the High Line Park
