Overview

The session will include a tour of Sherman Avenue, which was designated as a Great Street by the American Planning Association in 2016. The tour will include a discussion of the history of the community’s historic business district, and a show-and-tell of the characteristics that make Sherman Avenue unique and appealing to visitors and locals, including connections to the lake, parks, the pedestrian amenities, design details, and revolving public art program. The tour will also cover the two decades worth of efforts that have made Sherman Avenue what it is today, including a discussion of the planning studies, economic development programs, and implementation of a multitude of strategies that have made it great (i.e., events, physical improvements, and partnerships). The tour will also include a stop at Innovation Collective, which is a partnership of start-up and tech businesses on Sherman Avenue. They are actively working to attract more tech businesses, including some high profile companies, to Coeur d’Alene and working closely with the University of Idaho.
