In this interactive session, participants will gain hands-on experience with creative techniques for community engagement that not only equitably and thoughtfully connect diverse community stakeholders, but help unlikely partners and people take ownership and find their place in a placemaking project. Members of the Just Act Ensemble from Philadelphia will share the story and theatre-based engagement process they pioneered for the ChesterMade project at its inception, then refined for This is Germantown Heart & Soul, and currently evolving for Just Act’s creative placemaking partnership with PCADC. Session facilitators will share activities that catalyzed positive relationships among people as well as strengthened residents’ interest and commitment to stewardship of place. We will lead you through a story sharing & interactive theater process that brings deeper meaning to local data, generates thinking, dialogue and ideas for collaborative action. Workshop participants will build a more precise understanding of the value and effectiveness of strategic, resident-powered, arts-based engagement in neighborhood development and creative placemaking.

Participants will also learn:

§  How to develop a resident-led, arts-based, inclusive community engagement team for your project

§  Defining and practicing generative listening

§  How to facilitate story circles with diverse community stakeholders

§  Creative approaches to data collection, impacting connectivity & developing a shared vision while growing placemaking
project ownership
