Overview

Michael Winstanley, AIA, AICP and Potomac Riverboat Company CEO Willem Polak will present their vision and thoughts of the vast potential benefits of water transportation for the Potomac, Anacostia, and Occoquan Rivers and the economic benefits along the DC, Maryland, and Virginia waterfronts. The session introduces a collaborative plan to establish a robust water transportation framework plan throughout the Nation’s Capital. The discussion describes the function of major water transportation systems throughout the US and Canada and how they serve their communities. The role of connectivity to metro-rail and bus systems is embraced to show the far reach such systems provide. The study identifies the definitive benefits of increasing the development of an intermodal ferry system to create resiliency by helping to sustain an increasing population and tourism, increasing evacuation routes, and facilitating flexible entry to the Nation’s Capital by emergency and official personnel in the event of a security threat.
