Mountain Village is uniquely located amidst an ecologically sensitive area that requires active planning for healthy forests. Come on a hiking tour and learn from Dave Bangert, the chief forester and senior planner for Mountain Village, about what healthy forests look like in this region, what future impacts are anticipated, and what Mountain Village has done to address these. Cost: $40

Learning Objectives:

1. Components of a healthy forested area

2. Forthcoming issues in forestry management

3. What local governments can do to support healthy forests, and mitigate concerns

Colorado communities have to be aware of the threats posed by natural disasters that are common to our state, and wildfire is no exception. Illustrating how to keep forests healthy, what best management practices exist for governments to keep forests healthy, and raising awareness about human interaction in forested areas will provide planners with better tools and insight as to how they can protect Colorado’s outdoors. We will discuss what makes a forest healthy and unhealthy; demonstrate what the Town of Mountain Village is doing to support healthy forestry; talk about nationwide concerns for planners living in forested areas; and about best management practices for all foresters and natural resource planners
