Overview

Mankato was settled on the boarders of the Minnesota River. Bent River Outfitters of Mankato will provide a guided canoe/kayak trip along the Minnesota River and potentially the Blue Earth River. The National Register Archaeologist, David Mather, from the State Historic Preservation Office will accompany the tour and offer a narrative focused on the history and geology of the rivers as well as human settlement in the area.

Participants will learn about the following:
• Historical and geological introduction of area rivers.
• Human history from an archaeological perspective.
• What the river means to Mankato, past and present.
• Cultural and natural resources the rivers provide.

Speakers

David Mather

David Mather is the National Register Archaeologist in the Minnesota Historic Preservation Office. He has been a professional archaeologist for more than 30 years and specializes in zooarchaeology, the archaeology of animal bones. He is also a writer and gardener, and loves canoeing.
