Several Central Florida communities, as well as most metropolitan areas across the nation, are facing a severe shortage of affordable housing units for low income households. In addition, the Orlando Metropolitan Area is expected to outpace the U.S. national average during the next 25 years by adding more than 1.2 million residents before 2040. The increasing demand for affordable units has prompted a Regional Affordable Housing Initiative for the Central Florida area. The Initiative is working with local partners to identify areas suitable for affordable housing, select effective regulatory and financial tools, and develop sustainable housing design strategies.
