Overview

The Federal Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) program is by far the largest funding source for multi-family affordable housing in the country with more than three million units produced since 1986. However, the highly technical nature of the LIHTC program and how it impacts local housing development can be daunting to understand. This session provides an overview of the LIHTC program and builds knowledge on such items as:

• The types of housing projects that are eligible for the LIHTC program,

• How LIHTC generates funds to help construct affordable housing projects,

• The difference between 4% and 9% LIHTC, and,

• How projects and communities compete for LIHTC resources.

During this session, attendees will gain a greater understanding of the LIHTC process, terms, trends, and its role in local housing development.
