This session will be a 90 minute, hands-on, in-depth discussion of real-world, innovative, and effective community engagement and public outreach tactics, tools, and techniques that are designed to give attendees new, as well as time tested, methods of engaging diverse stakeholders. With four break-out small groups, participants will brainstorm, share ideas, and dive deeply into: partnerships ? how to cultivate meaningful partnerships and build strong coalitions with community-based organizations, nonprofits, religious organizations, and the general public; programs ? what activities make people contribute, generate interest, and inspire personal investment; methods ? how to elicit participation, educate the public, and demystify planning concepts and issues; and challenges ? what questions, roadblocks, and real-life scenarios are planners encountering and what are the potential solutions. Participants will rotate through each facilitated small group, brainstorming and sharing ideas. Facilitators will help identify themes, distill information, and establish key ideas. These will be shared in a final large group discussion. Los Angeles Neighborhood Initiative (LANI) is a nonprofit organization specializing in substantive stakeholder participation and meaningful public engagement. For over 24 years, LANI has worked in challenged communities that represent the breadth and diversity of Los Angeles County.
