One Presentation Title: What is a Food System Plan? A look at an emerging plan type through a national scan and a case study of Lawrence and Douglas County.
The leaders behind the City of Lawrence and Douglas County Food System Plan, adopted summer 2017, will provide an overview of the plan’s structure and review the intentional community engagement steps taken in the creation process. The findings from a national scan of food plans will present key characteristics and differences within this emerging sub-field.
One Presentation Title: Defining Rural Food Deserts by Travel Behaviors: Case Studies in Kansas and North Dakota
The existing definitions of rural food deserts are based on analogies to urban environments rather than the reality of how people in rural areas travel to acquire food. This study offers a definition of rural food deserts informed by the actual travel behaviors of rural populations.
