Overview

Conference theme

This session relates to the conference theme through “public participation/outreach” by using examples from three different scenarios of public participation in the planning process through an interactive exercise; helping the strategy of planners in their efforts to resolve challenges for maximizing community input.

Training objective

Using ideas generated from the scenarios in the presentation, participants will begin devising methods that help to resolve their respective challenges to maximize community input into the planning process. This exercise serves as a forum for a pseudo think tank to plug into a larger public engagement strategy, encouraging planners to reach into their experience and work with new ideas to cultivate a grab bag of methods and solutions for public participation.

What a planner with at least 4 years of experience will attain

This session will help planners at all skill levels, including experienced staff and department managers who affect department policy. Specifically, staff and project managers focused on public engagement strategy in the planning process will benefit from the examples explored in the case studies of this session, adding in efforts to bolstering public participation.

What attendees will learn from the session

Attendees will expand their menu of options and strategies in community engagement. This workshop draws from examples in three different public engagement scenarios, in addition to the collective experience of the participants, to brainstorm public engagement action plan elements for their own purposes. Using ideas generated from the session exercises, participants will begin devising methods that help to resolve their respective challenges to maximize community input into the planning process.
