Overview

Interactive Mini-Workshop to Practice Skills Needed to Manage and Supervise Transportation Staff

Workshop attendees will participate in mock performance evaluations with their peers, alternating roles of supervisor

and employee, for four types of employees:  talented worker, unmotivated worker, poor performer, and an employee

who becomes defensive during the evaluation. The workshop will begin with a short presentation (Mike Fitch, ODOT) to

provide an understanding of the fundamental communication skills, leadership styles, and emotional intelligence

required to work more effectively with staff. An experienced supervisor (Lloyd MacAdam, ODOT) will provide expert

insider tips and guidance on effective supervision. This workshop will provide a learn-by-doing environment for

transportation engineers to strengthen skills needed to be effective in their current role or to prepare for future career

opportunities, and is an excellent alternative to a traditional OTEC lecture.
