By the end of this session, participants will have a better understanding of BRT as a mode, in general, and the North-South BRT project, in particular.
The session will begin with an overview definition of BRT - how it's defined, where it operates, and it's benefits and challenges - and an overview of the Federal Transit Administration's Capital Investment Grant Program.
The session will then focus on the North-South BRT project in Chapel Hill, NC, including how the North-South Study Team defined the mode, route, station locations, and service plan; how ridership, capital, and operating costs were calculated; and how station area, traffic/parking, and environmental impacts were estimated. The session will include an overview of the interactive spreadsheet tool that was developed to help demonstrate trade-offs between design decisions and drive the decision-making process.
The session will conclude with a summary of lessons learned when planning and designing federally-competitive BRT projects.
