Overview

Panel presentation intended to provide professional planners with information about subdivision design and regulation in flood hazard areas.  The session will focus particularly on rural communities in the state of North Carolina.

By the end of this session, participants will have a better understanding of the challenges of subdivision design in flood hazard areas and the tools to develop more smartly in the floodplain.  Rural communities face unique challenges with regard to their floodplains that are different than urban and suburban areas.  They may have agriculture rather than physical development predominating their floodplain lands, but at the same time can have high vulnerabilities due to low quality manufactured housing or old housing that is already in the floodplain.  This session will touch upon a broad array of local planning tools and land use control and management that are particularly relevant in rural contexts.
