Oxford and Starkville, Mississippi, home of Ole Miss and Mississippi State respectively, embarked on nearly simultaneous planning efforts with essentially the same consulting team in 2015. Each of the these college towns presented its own distinctive planning challenges of sprawl, outdated planning concepts, unwieldy zoning ordinances, student housing issues, and challenging political environments. Each proposed unique planning solutions. Both plans and the codes that have followed are moving towards a successful conclusion with real promise for building better places.
