The US Department of Energy developed the “Guiding Principles for Sustainable Federal Buildings and Associated Instructions” to assist federal entities in meeting EO 13693 sustainability performance goals. The Guiding Principles evaluate sustainable performance based on 18 metrics organized under six guiding principles. The guidance establishes overarching environmental performance goals; promotes green building design, construction, and operation practices; supports occupant health, wellness, and productivity; and addresses climate change risks.

This session presents an overview of requirements for meeting the Guiding Principles and explores the opportunities and challenges associated with implementing the Guiding Principles’ mandatory and elective metrics
