Overview

This walking tour will explore the Lower Garden District―its history, its architecture over its 200 years, and major changes of the last 40 years, including the removal of the bridge ramp and the subsequent dramatic increase in property values.  Through the ongoing EIS for a new Mississippi River crossing and Section 106, the neighbors successfully negotiated the relocation of the alignment, the removal of an entrance ramp, and the restoration of a portion of the neighborhood park.

Training objectives:

·         How neighborhood history can help shape planning perspective

·         How a proposed bridge was defeated by public opposition and the forming of a historic district

·         How mitigation measures from a NEPA process can be used to enhance a community

·         How a 200-year-old neighborhood has transformed over time
