As people realize the value of local trails, and as users are seeking a variety of experiences close to home, land managers need strategies to meet the needs of passive use recreationalists, for dog walkers, hikers, equestrians, mountain bikers, and winter sport enthusiasts. Designing and trails and trail systems to meet these needs while maintaining the ecological and esthetic values of the landscape is critical to a successful trail system.  Integrating the various user groups in a positive manner provides more opportunities for volunteerism and support for open space and encourages the development of a feeling of community.
