Is your city worrying about what neighboring jurisdictions are doing before passing bold housing policy? Does it ever feel like your staff is reinventing the (housing policy) wheel? Find out how cities across the country are addressing these problems by working together on housing planning, policy development and implementation.
The 21 cities in California’s San Mateo County have jointly hired a consultant to help them adopt impact fees, resulting in tens of millions of new dollars for affordable housing. The cities meet regularly to collaborate, share and adopt one another's research, staff reports, presentations and ordinances.
In the Minneapolis/St. Paul region, a coalition has created resources and offered grants for cities interested in creating mixed-income housing policies. Over 55 city mayors from across the region come together to discuss housing issues collaboratively, which helps them move toward specific city action strategies.
In Greater Boston, the Metropolitan Area Planning Council and the Metropolitan Mayors Coalition are establishing a Regional Housing Taskforce. This group of 15 mayors and managers, including the cities of Boston and Somerville, is working together on a regional housing compact that entails development principles, a demand target, and strategies to meet demand both at the local and state levels.
