In the face of unprecedented urban densities and rising real estate values, maintaining the urban forest to maximize the ecosystem services it provides is critical to the health and wellbeing of our cities. Community participation in the landscape and education of environmental processes is essential to the survival of our urban forests. Designing landscapes and maintenance schemes that foster environmental activism and stewardship greatly increases the success of urban vegetation.

This panel will provide participants with evidence-based schema to foster stewardship and incorporate community-led urban forest management into design.

Panelists will discuss the importance of emotional investment of our urban landscapes, and the novel ways landscape architects can engage with the public regarding urban ecosystems. They will examine how decision makers can work at local and systemic scales to make cities vibrant and inclusive systems.
