Historically, our streets have been designed with drivers as the primary user in mind. As Denverites are increasingly choosing to walk, bike, scoot, or take the bus, street design practices need to be modernized to create streets that are safe, comfortable, and enjoyable for all users. Jill Locantore with the Denver Streets Partnership and WalkDenver will moderate and kickoff the session with an introduction to the topic, including who we should be designing for. To provide attendees with a specific example of Denver’s street users, Emily Lindsey from the Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG) will present findings on who is choosing to bike (or choosing not to) from a survey conducted as part of the Denver region’s first‐ever Active Transportation Plan. Rachel Finfer from Toole Design will delve into what we know about Complete Streets design from a in‐depth review of practices around North America. Rachel will discuss how we can better design for all types of people as she distills various guidance into the Top 10 best practices in Complete Streets design. The session will include interactive polling, engaging all audience members in an inclusive manner.

Learning Objectives:

1. Learn about how Denver is starting to rethinking its street design

2. Learn about who rides a bike in the Denver region and special considerations for design
