The neighborhoods of North Denver (Globeville, Elyria, Swansea, Cole, and Five Points) will be the site of major construction and capital improvements for the next several years. Projects include infrastructure improvement on major street arteries, parks, to coordinating other catalytic projects at Central 70 and the National Western Center which will ultimately improve the built environment for these, the oldest neighborhoods in Denver. In the meantime, construction is causing disruption for this community and the people living there. As a way to help support the residents of north Denver, the Mayor’s Office of the North Denver Cornerstone Collaborative (NDCC) developed a leadership program for the women of north Denver; North Denver Women Who Lead. This 12-week series focused on providing women in the Globeville, Elyria, and Swansea communities the opportunities and knowledge to build leadership and job skills to empower their personal and professional lives – while also helping them better engage and lead within the north Denver communities and beyond. Moving forward these future leaders will be involved in the public engagement and information sharing for many of the projects happening in north Denver. This program is a beautiful example of the City’s grassroots efforts and commitment to community partnerships. This panel will candidly share how to effectively prioritize funding for programs like these to better deliver highly visible projects. Understand the lessons learned from this pilot program and hear the success stories from a program participant.

Learning Objectives:

1. How to execute a grassroots effort from a City entity

2. How to overcome poor precedent to achieve a successful City-run program

3. How to effectively pivot in order to provide the most benefit for the most number of people
