This presentation highlights the reintroduction of agriculture into the urban landscape. Several different public processes used in finding a balance between conflicting interests will be highlighted as well as the public involvement approaches used. In addition, GIS and policy techniques to situate urban farms and farmers markets in areas marked by diet-related disease and disinvestment will be explored. This presentation will provide planners with new tools to recover, restore, and reinvent the lost agricultural heritage of urban life. Planners will re-discover Jane Jacob’s insight that there is nothing more native to urban vitality and development than agricultural development.
