Overview

Watershed University evolved from a recognition that many communities could not afford the investment of time and money to send floodplain managers and other professionals to the annual Floodplain Management Association (FMA) Conference. These smaller, often rural, communities had the greatest challenge in accessing information, and the greatest need for the information. In 2012, the first WU event was headed up by Kathy Schaefer (FEMA Region 9), who brought together subject matter experts from local, state, and Federal agencies to Redding, Calif. and provided education and networking opportunities for northern California floodplain, water, and emergency managers.
