Tuesday, September 26, 2017, 8 a.m.
Thursday, September 28, 2017, noon CDT
Michigan City, IN, United States
The 2017 Indiana Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) Conference is an annual event showcasing progressive planning initiatives from the fourteen MPO's in the state. This year's event takes place on the shores of Lake Michigan in Michigan City, Indiana, and presents a unique perspective on learning by offering primarily mobile workshops. These workshops aim to highlight planning progress in NW Indiana through a variety of topics and professional presenters.
The workshops offered include a focus on infrastructure projects such as the expansion of a local commuter line and redevelopment of two lakefront sites into prime recreation areas. Other workshops focus on the rich diversity of the local ecosystem with a canoe ride down a waterway restored for recreational use, and a visit to the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and State Park. These latter sites will include a bicycle tour on newly-paved trails, as well as an in-depth review from park staff on the many improvements that have helped the visitors experience to this national treasure.
Other workshops will include tours of mixed-use and sustainable developments that have become popular in the region. A number of communities have benefited from these enhancements and local officials will debrief conference participants on their successes. Since NW Indiana is a haven for environmental planning, workshops will also be offered on the transformation of transit stock to "green fleets," or sustainable energy vehicles. Further emphasis on environmental enhancements will include a workshop on green infrastructure practices such as stormwater and stream restoration projects.
Apart from these workshops, a block of time will be afforded to "PowerPlanningPalooza," which is a fast-paced, rapid-fire series of presentations offered in 20-minute segments. The set-up will involve a room full of tables, with a specific planning topic and host assigned to each table. The format provides conference attendees an excellent opportunity to maximize their learning on a vast number of planning matters taking place statewide.
